Copyrights are confusing so I’d like to explain how my copyright effects the textures that I create and share.
Since I am the original creator of the textures all rights to the textures belong only to me.“All rights” means I control who is allowed use my textures and how they can use my textures. Ha, didn’t know I was this powerful did you! LOL!
However, since I have created these textures and have decided to share with others I am allowing (or granting) certain rights to individuals to use my textures in their own work. Ownership of the texture will always remain with me, I am simply allowing others to use the textures but within the guidelines that I set.
Those guidelines are set up by using a Creative Commons license.
When you use my textures you are in effect creating what can be called a derivative work, which is artwork that includes art (textures in this case) that were created by someone else.
My textures are in your work, your work is in my textures!
So in order to be clear about what other artists can do with my textures I allow specific usage by adding a Creative Commons (CC) license on each texture. Depending on how I am using the texture personally the textures I allow others to use will have one type of license or another type of license. Confusing…yes…and no. There are different types of creative commons licenses – the CC license an artist can apply to a work depends on how they want others to use or not use their art work. You can review those licenses here:The licenses
For my textures there is one unbreakable rule:You must, in writing, always attribute the texture to this website. That attribution can be a live link to the texture or this website, or the words “Texture courtesy of www.cathairstudios.com.
I have some textures that I am allowing anyone to use as part of their own work as long as the work that is created is never sold. In other words if you want to use one of my textures on an image you plan on printing and selling, or if you plan on using one of my textures on a website as a background or as part of the artwork on the website – you can not do that. This license is called an Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike.
In this case “Share-Alike” means any images you create that include my textures can not be sold – I did not sell it to you so you in turn can not sell what you make using my textures. This is the most restrictive license of all.
However, my textures, my rules so to speak,I can change the rights to my images for specific types of use — all you have to do is contact me, tell me how you plan on using the texture and I’ll send you some specific wording to use along with my texture. Its easy… just ask!
Ask if you would like to use a texture on something you would like to sell!
As I mentioned if you want to use one of my textures that is specifically marked as Non-Commercial for a commercial purpose – email me - susan at cathairstudios.com
Can I add your textures to my texture package? No…
NO, if you would like to add my textures to a texture package that you intend to distribute please contact me first.
I used your textures now what?
First of all thank you for using one of my textures! Now please show me what you created! You can post a small sample in my Flickr photostream or add a comment here with a link to your artwork.
To wrap up: Please be sure to follow the attribution listed below the texture, and be sure to follow my express wishes for use of the textures – if it says don’t sell it – then please don’t sell it. I will be making more textures available that only require an attribution so check back often.
And remember if the license says you can’t sell it – email me, let me know what you are planning to do and I’ll get back to you as soon as possible!
