Moonlight Ride

The Moonlight Ride

Update 08/09 – the comments are over 700 and over 100 Flickr members have acknowledged it as one of their personal Favorites – what a huge honor!

Wow, wow, wow, is all I can say! One hundred eleven comments and counting on Flickr!

I usually work on some digital images as a way of relaxing at the end of the day. About a week ago I was working on a catalog for a client, which can get a bit boring, so I wanted to create a new digital image to work off some creative steam and work on some new techniques. So much to learn and so little time to learn it all!

So I went into my photo browser and with no idea in mind just picked the first one that subliminally yelled out – “Hey look at ME”! The photo was one that I took earlier this spring up at Oneida Shores Park, which is a lovely little park with a beach on Oneida Lake which is a bit north of me.

As usual I tried some different ways to texturize and colorize to the photo. The original was of the shore line with some trees running off to the right and the lake to the left. Then after a while I thought – hummm…this needs a boat. So I went looking for a nice little sail boat. Found one, placed it and it looked completely fake…not going to work.

But kept looking in the Creative Commons Flickr group for more images. Finally I came across an image of a Viking ship a “Shnjaka”. I had used another image similar to this in another Flickr competition. And this one fit perfectly! The size was right, the angle of the boat was right it was all perfect!

And…it also suggested a story! Some romantic legend or something so I decided to keep working on the image even though I thought it was pretty much complete. So I added the moon – yes, I want to add the moon into all my images if I can! – and then I had to add some mist. Can’t have a story without mist…

I’ve never tired to create mist before so I had to find a quick tutorial on that – I knew I could create mist by using clouds but I wanted to make it from scratch. So I found exactly want I was looking for – and the final image has been one of my best yet! I can’t believe all the hits and wonderful comments and invites its receiving! Its really amazing and such an honor – you can see the image and links to the little boat image here.

If I get some time I’ll post a tutorial using this image as my base. Except I have to remember what I did!! Good thing I save all my variations!
